Description
I've enjoyed teaching 1 on 1 sax and woodwind lessons for as long as I've been playing professionally, which is about 25 years, both privately and as the Jazz Saxophone Teacher at the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts in S.E. London. I'm a professional performer and session musician on saxophones and woodwinds. I've worked with many bands, artists and composers over the years in many styles.
I teach anything that involves playing the saxophone clarinet and flute - technique, improvising, harmony, transcription, reading, phrasing etc, in any style of music.
Each lesson i teach is influenced by what each student aspires to, and what their weaknesses and strengths are. If you have pieces or ideas you'd like to work on we will spend some time on those things, i will also suggest exercises and pieces that i think will benefit you. I have a large selection of pieces we can work with that are fun and challenging. I use email to send these for you to print out. So in other words, each lesson is tailor made for you to develop and grow as a player and musician.

Ian is professional, highly experienced, and is thorough and clear in the way he presents new ideas and techniques. He is always happy to answer questions and has helped me improve my playing exponentially in the time I have been studying with him. He approaches teaching flexibly and adapts his lessons to suit you as a person and what you need. He has a thorough knowledge of his instruments, and there is no question he can’t answer. He has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of music theory, and can present theory-based ideas and exercises with clarity. He’s friendly and welcoming, and is very patient! He has helped me improve my embouchre, my breathing techniques, and my fingering on the instrument amongst many other things. I’ve learnt more from Ian in the last few weeks than two years of my own self studying! Can highly recommend!

He has the enviable combination of being inclusive and laid back yet has a wealth of experience in the discipline and application all musicians must bring to bear on their chosen profession. His musical tastes are wonderfully broad — the towering figures of jazz from Parker on down to Latin, klezmer and a host of others. He is a one-man proof that in an age of increasingly virtual instruction the value of one-to-one actual live exchange with the right person cannot be equalled.
