I teach all levels from beginners upwards, so if you have never picked up a musical instrument but want to give the guitar a go then I'd be very happy to help getting you started. You may want to take your playing to the next level, tidy up your technique, finally get to know theory or even learn to read music. Maybe you just need someone else who can give you some extra guidance and direction.
I am able to take on students for the electric/acoustic guitar from beginner upwards and classical guitar from beginner to intermediate. I have experience with the Rock School and ABRSM examination syllabuses should you wish to take graded exams.
I approach teaching the guitar from a skills perspective - whatever songs or style of music you wish to play it will incorporate a range of skills that require at least some degree of attention to allow them to be used fluently within the music eg. being able to play notes and chords correctly and change smoothly between them; being able to feel the beat of the music and play in-time to it; being able to play 8th and 16th note rhythms; right-hand strumming technique; listening whilst playing; remembering sequences of chords/notes and understanding song structures; being able to 'perform' a short piece with musical expression.
Outside of teaching I play as a guitarist and bassist in function bands and musical theatre shows and do 'dep' (stand-in) gigs. This has enabled me to develop an understanding of a variety of genres. My main passion is the music of Django Reinhardt - the gypsy jazz/swing genre and I run my own quintet and trio in that style.
I hold a grade 8 certificate in Electric Guitar (distinction) from RSL and also a grade 5 certificate in music theory from ABRSM.
