I have 25 years' experience as a working bass player and I am passionate about teaching bass guitar from a bass player’s perspective; bass is often taught by musicians who do not play bass as their first instrument and therefore don’t always approach playing it in quite the same way a bassist would. Bass is not just a big guitar missing some strings! :)
With the majority of my students I use the Trinity College London Rock & Pop Bass syllabus as a basis for learning. This provides an excellent structure and progression path, gradually building your skills and always using well-known popular songs as the context for new ideas. Many students choose to take grading exams at the end of each stage but this is in no way essential if you prefer not to.
For intermediate players wanting help with specific areas of your playing the lessons will be tailored to your individual needs. My approach at all levels is to focus in on the essentials needed to become a well rounded bass player; technique, time and groove, fretboard knowledge, harmony and chord theory, transcription, chart reading etc. Put together these allow us to understand and play existing music and just as importantly become able to create our own great basslines.
I am based at Rattle & Drum Music in central Derby for in-person lessons but also have a high-quality home setup for teaching online. I use multiple cameras and a direct audio interface so you can see and hear exactly what you need to to get the very best out of your lesson. For example videos please see my social media links.
I offer a free trial lesson to all online students; I believe this is a sensible approach so we can make sure that there are no technological barriers and to make sure both parties are happy to work together going forward.
I have a full DBS Enhanced Certificate and £10 million Public Liability Insurance.
